BRONZE AWARDS
The Canadian Lifesaving Bronze Awards provide more advanced education in water safety and aquatic training. There are three Bronze Awards; Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, and Bronze Cross. The third Bronze Award, Bronze Cross, is a prerequisite for most advanced aquatic training programs, including National Lifeguard (NLS) and Lifesaving Instructor (LSI).
BRONZE STAR
DESCRIPTION: The Lifesaving Society Bronze Star is the first bronze award. This course introduces and develops decision making skills needed for water safety and first aid. Candidates will also have to complete a timed endurance swim of 400 meters in 12 minutes or less. This course also includes CPR level A certification.
LENGTH: 15 hours
PREREQUISITES: Ability to swim and 8 years old to 12 years old.
BRONZE MEDALLION
DESCRIPTION: The Bronze Medallion is the second level in the bronze family. This course focuses on developing an understanding of the lifesaving principles of water rescue education: judgment, fitness, knowledge, and skill. Candidates will also have to complete a timed endurance swim of 500 meters in 15 minutes or less. This course includes CPR Level A certification.
REQUIRED MATERIALS: Canadian Lifesaving Manual and barrier devices.
LENGTH: 25 hours
PREREQUISITES: Bronze Star or minimum age of 13 years old.
BRONZE CROSS
DESCRIPTION: The Bronze Cross Award is the third level in the Bronze Family. The Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for advanced aquatic training programs including National Lifeguard certification and Lifesaving Instructor certification. This course also includes a timed distance swim of 600 meters in 18 minutes or less. This course includes Standard First Aid and CPR level C.
REQUIRED MATERIALS: Canadian Lifesaving Manual, Canadian First Aid Manual and barrier devices.
LENGTH: 30 hours
PREREQUISITES: Bronze Medallion by the first day of the course.
LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS
Lifesaving Instructor
The Lifesaving Instructor (LSI) course includes the following certifications: First Aid Instructor, Swim for Life Instructor and Lifesaving Instructor. After completion of the LSI course, Lifesaving Instructors will be certified to teach and evaluate the following:
- Lifesaving Society’s First Aid Programs (Standard First Aid, Emergency First Aid, and CPR Level A, B, and C)
- Lifesaving Society’s Swim for Life Program (Fitness Swimmer, Adult Swimmer 1-3, Swimmer 1-6, Preschool 1-5, Parent & Tot 1-3, Lifesaving Fitness, and Swim to Survive)
- Lifesaving Society’s Canadian Lifesaving Program (Distinction, Bronze Cross, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Star, Star Patrol, Ranger Patrol, and Rookie Patrol)
Course Length: 44 hours
Prerequisites: At least 16 years old by last day of course, Bronze Cross by first day of course, and Standard First Aid by first day of course.
Required Course Materials: Canadian Lifesaving Manual, Canadian First Aid Manuel, Swim for Life Award Guide, Swimming and Lifesaving Instructor Handbook, Swim Patrol Award Guide, Bronze Medals Award Guide, Distinction Award Guide, Lifesaving First Aid Award Guide, Lifesaving CPR Student Manual, Instructor Notes, Manitoba Program Guide, Barrier devices and whistle.
